I am often asked what is a Life Coach and exactly what do you do? Good questions! It is such a vague and non-descriptive title that leaves people saying “huh?’

My sole purpose of being a Life Coach is helping people feel good. So many people are miserable, frustrated and unsatisfied with their lives. It can occur anytime during or throughout our lives but is especially heightened during mid-life years. Hence the term, mid-life crisis. My job as a Life and Health Coach is to help people put the correct pieces of their life puzzle together so they feel good about who they are, what they are doing, who they are surrounding themselves with and most importantly, where they want their lives to be going. It’s different with everyone but it starts with feeling good.

No matter where you currently are in your life you can feel better and eventually feel good if not great. I look at the areas that brings one joy and happiness as well as the areas that are creating stress, unease and unhappiness. Feeling good is a mind set and it takes daily practice, conscious decisions and a true desire to make your life healthier and happier. My job as a Coach is to help you put the pieces of your life together so that it works for you. You know yourself better than anybody else. I help you move and make changes that will create a better and happier you. And when you feel good you are in a better space to make good choices for your life.

With mid-life comes a variety of changes. Our bodies begin taking on a new shape. For some it’s a wider bottom. For others it’s a denser mid-section. And for many it may be a total body weight gain. As a woman going through my own mid-life issues these are my suggestions for dealing with a mid-life body.

First, have a healthy approach to taking good care of yourself. Understand that even though our body is not like it was in our 20′s, 30′s and 40′s there is no reason to just say “the hell with it” and continue eating like you did when you were younger. Your metabolism slows down so you do not need to eat as much as you used to. So pay attention not only to the portions of food you eat but also when you are full. It is surprising how little food we need as we get older.

Second, don’t deprive your enjoyment of life. Go with the flow and allow yourself and your body to age in a healthy way. You may not fit in that size 6, 8 or 10 pair of pants. If you are exercising and eating moderately then don’t beat yourself up. That will only create a downward spiral of upset and disappointment.

Finally, embrace and love yourself and your body. It has gotten you through the many ups and downs of life. You have made it to mid-life so celebrate! Look at where you want to go from here. Your body is only the outer part of you. It’s that inner part of you that counts. This includes your true desires, feelings and aspirations for the rest of your life.

What exactly does follow your bliss mean? Well, to me following your bliss means discovering what you truly want for yourself in this lifetime. It means discovering who you are, what you want and then focusing upon how you will get there.

Many people in mid–life often discover that they are unhappy, unfulfilled and disappointed in the ways their lives have turned out. Mid-life is a wonderful time to begin re-evaluating what they truly want for themselves. It is a time to get in touch with their hearts and feel what will bring them joy, happiness and bliss.

If you are at a point in your life where you cannot say you are happy then maybe it is time to discover who you are and what will make your life more meaningful, fun and fulfilling. It is never too late to follow your bliss.

Time management. Most people who feel overwhelmed and out of control in their life are usually poor time managers. When you put so much on your plate and daily schedule that you never have time to rest and relax then time is controlling your life instead of you controlling your time.

For some reason people tend to think that the busier they are the better their lives will be. That every minute of every day needs to be filled with some activity whether it be work, driving somewhere, meeting with friends, talking on the telephone or texting/emailing someone. So, when do you take time to rejuvenate, rest, relax and just read a book for leisure?

Time management is a skill that takes time, patience and focus. Saying “no” is a huge component to becoming a better time manager. What is the end result of allowing time to manage you? Stress, illness, exhaustion, frustration and anxiety are just a few. When you become a good time manager life flows much easier and there is no need to rush or hurry through life because you are in control of your time instead of time controlling of you.

“If you keep thinking like you’ve always thought you’ll keep getting what you’ve always gotten”. The way you think, which are your attitudes, usually determines the way you feel and act. Consistently thinking bad thoughts leads to a life that is probably negative and unhappy. Whereas positive attitudes and ways of thinking generally supports a positive outlook and enjoyable life. It’s not by accident. There is a direct link between the way you think and the results you are getting in life.

The question I ask my clients is, “How is your life working?” If life is happy and fulfilling I tell them to keep doing whatever you’re doing and thinking because you’re getting good results in your life. But if your life is filled with sadness, negativity and disappointment you may feel that life is hard, unfair and miserable. One of the first steps I use with my clients to help them improve their lives is helping them replace their negative attitudes and ways of thinking with positive ones.

It takes time to change your habits of thought because you’ve been thinking the same way for so long. But if you are not getting the results you want in life start telling yourself positive affirmations such as “I am worthy.” “I deserve to be happy”and ” I like myself”. Surround yourself with positive people. Stop watching negative television programs. Begin making more mindful and conscious choices about what you want for yourself.

It takes time, consistency and determination to change your life for the better. Replacing negative thoughts with positive ones is the first step in a series of steps towards living a happier, healthier and loving life.

Are you asking yourself “what’s next for me in the next phase of my life”? Mid-life transitions including divorce, menopause, body changes, health issues and retirement questions often appear more relevant at this time than at any other time in a person’s life. It can create worry, anxiety and unsettling fears about what your future will look like. Having enough money to retire, gaining weight, being alone may include some of those fears. As a Life and Health Coach here are a few of my suggestions to help you ease your fears and anxieties:

First, I always ask my clients to identify exactly what fears, doubts and and other emotions they are feeling and why. The “why” is the most important part of this exercise. When you can verbalize how you are feeling and why you are feeling those emotions we can then work on a strategy and game plan for overcoming the obstacles of worrying and anxiety.

Franklin D. Roosevelt said “the only thing you have to fear is fear itself”. We often allow our imagination and fears to “run wild”. We keep thinking about the “what if’s” instead of dealing with the issues head on and staying in the present moment and not getting caught up in what may or may not happen in the future.

Take a deep breath, specifically identify the issue that is troublesome and then brainstorm possible ways to deal with it. Mid-Life can be an emotional roller coaster. Remember to try to stay in the present moment and not allow your worries to paralyze you. Ask for help when you need it and know that you are not alone. There are millions of mid-life baby boomers dealing with the same issues.

This is not a sappy blog about how we should get all touchy feely and tell ourselves how wonderful we are—or is it? What is wrong with not only liking but actually loving yourself? I’m not talking about being vain and egotistical. I’m talking about appreciating your talents, gifts and daily achievements. As a personal trainer and life coach in Tucson, AZ I often help my clients improve their self-worth and self-esteem. So often we are our own worst enemies and say terrible things to ourselves. What you say to yourself definitely contributes to how you feel about yourself. And how you feel about yourself is often reflected in the quality of your life. After all who spends more time not only looking at yourself in the mirror but also just being with yourself?—You do. Wouldn’t it be nice to like and love who you see in that mirror?

If you already like who you see in the mirror you are on the right track. If you don’t you may be on a downward spiral of thinking and feeling bad. The more you think and feel bad the more negative results you may be experiencing in your relationships, career and health. In addition, the less you like and love yourself the less likely others will like and love you. So, how do you begin the process of first liking and eventually loving yourself?

One of the first steps is replacing those negative thoughts and self-deprecating feelings about yourself with positive ones. Instead of telling yourself “I’m fat”, “I’m not good enough”, or “I’ll never get to where I want to go in life” replace it with “I’m feeling better and better everyday”, “I’m taking it one step at a time” and “I’m taking better care of myself”. These are called positive affirmations. They are one of the easiest and most powerful tools towards the upward spiral of self-love, self-care and self-kindness.

Yes, loving yourself really is possible. Even if you don’t quite believe it why not at least try to look in the mirror each day and tell yourself you are worth it? You are worth it. You are worth. You are worth it!

Motivation means to move and take action. Nothing happens unless you move. But often we are motivated by negative events instead of positive ones. This results in being overweight, settling on a mediocre life and compromising your happiness. So, how can you get motivated and take the right steps to achieve a better life?

First, define exactly what a better life would look like to you. If it’s losing weight how much do you want to lose and how will it make your life better? If it’s making a career change be sure you know exactly what the benefits and consequences those steps will have on you.

Many of my personal training clients in Tucson come to me because they want to feel better, lose weight and improve their fitness level. The have a positive attitude and want to take even better care of themselves. I have also had clients come to me after they have had a heart attack, been diagnosed with diabetes or suffered a stroke. The are motivated as well. But their motivation is out of fear of declining health and the urgency to take better care of themselves.

Same with my coaching clients. Some men and women come to me because they want to stretch themselves and reach even greater goals. Their lives are already good but they want help to stay focused and accountable in order to reach their goals. I also see individuals who feel defeated, lost and have no idea what they want in their lives. They may have experienced repeated failures and setbacks and need help building their inner strength, self-confidence and belief in themselves.

One of the key ingredients to a better life is motivation. Motivation comes from within. Motivation creates action. And you must move and be motivated in order to get to where you want to go. We all need help getting motivated. Ask for help and get moving towards a better you!

If you’ve come to my website looking for help you’ve come to the right place. As a personal trainer and life coach for mid-lifers I know the challenges in dealing with being overweight and struggling with the emotions of mid-life. Often they go hand in hand. That’s why my coaching helps you from the inside and out–dealing with both mental and physical issues.

Negative thinking leads to negative behaviors which leads to unhealthy habits and unwanted results–feelings of being stuck, overwhelmed, stress and lack of energy. But you can learn to take control of your life and live a happier and healthier one. It’s called accountability, responsibility and courage.

Don’t wait another moment to be sad and miserable. If you need help reaching your goals ask for help. A coach’s job is to help you figure out your goals, help you create a plan that works for you and stay on track and focused until you reach those goals.

It takes courage to ask for help and determination to change your old habits. Make this day the day you will do something to push yourself up, take control of your life, invest in your health and start on your path to better self-care.
